Terms of Service

Last updated: 20 October 2026 · Effective: 12 December 2026

Operated by [to be confirmed], sole proprietor, trading as [to be confirmed], [to be confirmed]

Note · This is a plain-language template provided for transparency. It is not a substitute for legal advice; the final, binding terms will be confirmed before public launch.

In short

  • Gmatri is for finding a marriage partner. It is not a dating service.
  • The person a profile is for must be at least 21 (men) or 18 (women) and free to marry.
  • Be truthful, and say honestly who created the profile.
  • Never ask for money, and never send it. Report anyone who asks.
  • Our badges confirm only what they say. Check everything else yourself before any commitment.
  • We remove content and accounts that break these rules. Complaints go to our Grievance Officer.

This summary is for convenience; the sections below are the Terms.

1. About Gmatri and these Terms

Gmatri is an online matrimony service for Tamil and South Indian families, offered under the brand “Guruji Matrimony by Aditya Guruji” through our website, our mobile apps and related services (together, the “Service”). The Service is run by a sole proprietorship: [to be confirmed], sole proprietor, trading as [to be confirmed], with its office at [to be confirmed] (“Gmatri”, “we”, “us” or “our”). Day-to-day operations, moderation and complaints are handled by our back office team.

These Terms of Service (“Terms”) are a binding agreement between you and us. They are an electronic record under the Information Technology Act, 2000 (the “IT Act”) and the rules made under it, and need no physical or digital signature. We publish them, with our Privacy Policy, under rule 3(1) of the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021 (the “IT Rules”).

By creating an account, signing in or otherwise using the Service, you agree to these Terms and to our Privacy Policy, and you confirm that you have read our short privacy notice. If you do not agree, please do not use the Service.

For the profiles, photos, messages and other content that members post, we are an “intermediary” under the IT Act. Members are responsible for what they post; we act on it as these Terms and the IT Rules set out.

2. For marriage only — not a dating service

Gmatri is meant only for finding a life partner with a view to marriage (a matrimonial alliance). It is not a dating website. You must not use it for dating, casual or short-term relationships or friendship-only contact, or to post, send or ask for obscene or sexual material. We may remove any profile or content that uses the Service for any other purpose.

3. Who can use Gmatri

Every profile on Gmatri is for one person who wants to marry (the “member”). The member must:

  • be at least 21 years old if a man, or at least 18 years old if a woman — the minimum ages for marriage under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006;
  • be legally free to marry under the law that applies to them — never married, divorced, widowed or with an annulled marriage. A member whose divorce is still pending may say so (“awaiting divorce”), but must not marry anyone until the divorce is final;
  • not be barred from using the Service under Indian law, and not have been removed from Gmatri before, unless we agree in writing.

The person who creates and holds the account must also be at least 18 and able to enter into a contract under the Indian Contract Act, 1872. If you are under 18, you may not use Gmatri at all.

We may ask for proof of age or marital status, and we may suspend or remove a profile that does not meet these rules.

4. Profiles created by family or friends

You may create a profile for yourself or — as a parent, brother, sister, other relative or friend — for someone else. Every profile shows who created it (for example “managed by parent”), and you must choose that honestly. If you create or manage a profile for someone else, you confirm that:

  • the member knows about the profile and agreed to it, and to the details and photos you add, before you created it — and you will remove the profile if they withdraw that agreement;
  • the member meets the rules in section 3;
  • you will not pretend to be the member when you talk to other members or their families, and will say who you are if asked;
  • you are responsible for everything done through the account.

The member can take over their profile: when they sign up with the phone number given for them, they can ask for the profile to be transferred to them, and our team reviews the request. Anyone who finds a profile of themselves that they did not agree to can ask us to remove it (section 14); we treat that as a complaint of impersonation.

5. Your account and sign-in

You sign in with your mobile number and a one-time password (OTP) sent by SMS — or, for some numbers outside India, by WhatsApp. One phone number holds one account, and one account holds one profile.

  • Never share your OTP. Anyone who has it can use your account. Gmatri staff will never ask you for it.
  • You are responsible for what happens on your account. Keep your phone and devices secure.
  • Tell us at once if you think someone else has used your account. You can sign out of all devices from Settings.
  • Keep your number up to date. You can change it in Settings; we confirm the new number by OTP.

6. Accurate profiles and what our verification means

You must give true, accurate, current and complete information about the member — including identity, age, marital status, children, religion, community, education, work, income, family and horoscope details — and correct it as soon as anything changes. Photos must be recent photos of the member: not of someone else, not AI-generated, and not edited to change how the member looks.

Our badges mean only what they say:

  • Phone verified — the account’s mobile number was confirmed by OTP.
  • Verified (ID verified) — the member submitted a government ID document and a selfie, and our team, helped by an automated liveness and face-match check, found that the face in the selfie matches the face on the document.

We do not verify anything else. We do not check marital status, education, employment, income, caste or community, family details, horoscope details or anyone’s intentions, and a badge is not a guarantee of a person’s identity, honesty or character. Before you take any step towards marriage, verify the person and their family yourself: meet with family, check documents and ask people you trust.

7. Horoscope and porutham — a reference, not advice

Nakshatra and rasi information, chart data and the 10-fold porutham reference shown in the Horoscope view are generated using astronomical calculations and traditional South Indian conventions. They are provided for cultural and informational reference only. They are not a prediction, and they must not be relied upon as professional, medical, legal, financial or relationship advice. We do not use porutham to rank or filter the profiles we show you.

Results depend on the accuracy of the birth date, time and place you provide, and may differ from those calculated by your family astrologer or priest. Decisions about marriage are yours and your family’s to make.

8. Free Premium year

Premium is free for every member from production launch until its first anniversary. Members who join later receive the remainder of this shared offer period. No card or payment is required. Privacy controls and measures to prevent spam continue to apply.

9. Content you must not post or share

Under rule 3(1)(b) of the IT Rules, you must not host, display, upload, modify, publish, transmit, store, update or share any information that:

  1. belongs to another person and to which you have no right;
  2. is obscene, pornographic or paedophilic; invades another person’s privacy, including bodily privacy; insults or harasses anyone on the basis of gender; is racially or ethnically objectionable; relates to or encourages money laundering or gambling, or an online game that causes user harm; or promotes enmity between groups on the grounds of religion or caste with the intent to incite violence;
  3. is harmful to a child;
  4. infringes any patent, trademark, copyright or other proprietary right;
  5. deceives or misleads the person who receives it about where the message came from, or knowingly and intentionally communicates any misinformation or information that is patently false, untrue or misleading;
  6. impersonates another person;
  7. threatens the unity, integrity, defence, security or sovereignty of India, India’s friendly relations with foreign States, or public order; causes incitement to the commission of any cognisable offence; prevents the investigation of any offence; or insults another nation;
  8. contains a software virus or any other computer code, file or program designed to interrupt, destroy or limit the functionality of any computer resource;
  9. is an online game that is not verified as a permissible online game;
  10. is an advertisement or surrogate advertisement for, or promotes, an online game that is not a permissible online game, or any online gaming intermediary offering such a game; or
  11. violates any law for the time being in force.

10. Other rules of conduct

To keep Gmatri safe and respectful, you must also not:

  • create more than one profile for the same person, or a profile for someone who does not meet section 3 or has not agreed to it;
  • use photos, voice recordings or other material that is AI-generated, morphed or altered to deceive, including “deepfakes”;
  • harass, threaten, stalk, abuse or blackmail anyone, or keep contacting someone who has declined, ignored or blocked you;
  • send sexual messages, images or requests;
  • share another member’s photos, phone number, messages or other details outside Gmatri without their permission, or use screenshots or recordings to embarrass, threaten or pressure anyone;
  • try to get around our contact and photo controls — for example by putting phone numbers, email addresses, links or social-media handles in chat before you have both agreed to share contact details;
  • use Gmatri as a marriage broker, bureau or agency, or for advertising, selling or any other commercial purpose, without our written permission;
  • copy or collect profiles, photos or other content by bots, scrapers or any other automated means, or try to remove watermarks or get past blurred photos, visibility settings or other access controls;
  • use another person’s account, probe or test our security, interfere with the Service, or reverse-engineer it except where the law allows.

11. Never send money — fraud and safety

Genuine members do not ask for money. You must never ask another member or their family for money, gifts, loans, investments, cryptocurrency, “customs”, visa or travel fees, or help in an “emergency”, and you must never ask for bank or card details, passwords or OTPs. If anyone asks you for any of these, stop replying, do not pay, and report them with the Report option or by writing to us (section 14). We may suspend the account and, where the law allows, share information with the police.

Gmatri will never ask you for money, an OTP, a password or bank details in a chat, a phone call or a WhatsApp message. If paid features are introduced, you will only ever pay through the checkout inside our app or website.

Staying safe

Take time to get to know someone. Meet for the first time in a public place and tell your family where you are going. Involve both families before any commitment, and never share your home address, financial details or intimate photos with someone you have not met.

12. Your content, privacy controls and how we check content

You keep ownership of the details, photos, voice recordings, messages and other content you add (“your content”). You are responsible for it, and you confirm that you have the right to share it — including any details about your family members.

You give us a non-exclusive, royalty-free, worldwide licence to host, store, copy, adapt (for example to resize or blur a photo, add a watermark or make a thumbnail) and display your content, only to run, secure and improve the Service and to show it to other members as your settings allow. The licence ends when you delete the content or your account, except for copies we must keep for the periods in our Privacy Policy.

You control who sees what:

  • Photos — you choose who can see them: everyone, only members you have accepted, members whose request you approve, or no one. Others see a blurred preview until they are allowed. We add a “Gmatri” watermark to profile photos and remove the location data hidden inside photo files.
  • Phone numbers — shared only after you and the other member have accepted each other, or only once you approve their request, as you choose in Settings.
  • Your whole profile — you can hide it at any time from Settings.

To protect members, we check content:

  • photos are checked automatically when they are uploaded — for nudity, offensive content, AI-generated images and photos with no person in them — and may be reviewed by our team; a photo can be refused or held back until it is reviewed;
  • chat messages are checked automatically before they are delivered, and messages containing phone numbers, email addresses, links, social-media handles or abusive words are not delivered;
  • when a member reports a profile or a conversation, our back office team may review that profile and read that conversation to deal with the report.

13. Reporting misuse, removing content and closing accounts

Every profile and chat has Report and Block options. Use them, or write to our Grievance Officer (section 14), to tell us about a fake profile, inappropriate photos, harassment, a request for money, someone who is already married, a broker or spam, or anything else that breaks these Terms.

If you do not comply with these Terms, our Privacy Policy or the IT Rules, we have the right to remove or disable access to the content concerned, restrict features, or suspend or terminate your access to the Service immediately — or any of these. Where it is practical and lawful, we will tell you what we did and why, and you can ask us to reconsider by writing to the Grievance Officer.

We also remove or disable access to content when a court order or a lawful notice from the Government or its agency requires it, within the time the IT Rules set. Where the law requires, we preserve removed information and related records for 180 days, or longer if a court or lawful authority asks, and we provide information to authorised government agencies for verifying identity or for preventing, detecting, investigating or prosecuting offences.

14. Grievance Officer and complaints

Under rule 3(2) of the IT Rules, our Grievance Officer is:

Grievance Officer, Gmatri

Name:
[to be confirmed]
Phone:
[to be confirmed]
Office:
[to be confirmed]
Response time:
acknowledge within 24 hours and resolve within 15 days

Complaints are handled day to day by our back office team, under the Grievance Officer.

How to complain

Write to the Grievance Officer at privacy@gmatri.in, or use Report in the app. Tell us your name and the phone number registered with Gmatri (if you have an account), which profile, photo or message you mean (a profile ID or a screenshot helps), what is wrong, and — if the content is about you — how we can confirm that it is you. You can complain even if you do not have a Gmatri account, and someone can complain on your behalf.

Our timelines

  • We acknowledge every complaint within 24 hours and resolve it within 15 days of receiving it.
  • If you ask us to remove content that breaks section 9 (other than complaints only under items (i), (iv) or (ix)), we act on it as quickly as possible and resolve it within 72 hours.
  • If content shows you — or the person you are complaining for — with private areas exposed, in full or partial nudity or in a sexual act or conduct, or impersonates you, including artificially morphed images, we take all reasonable and practicable measures to remove it or disable access to it within 24 hours of receiving the complaint.
  • If the IT Rules set a shorter time for any kind of complaint, we follow the shorter time.

If you are not satisfied

You may appeal a decision of our Grievance Officer to the Grievance Appellate Committee set up by the Government of India, within 30 days of receiving it, at gac.gov.in. For complaints about your personal data, see section 13 of our Privacy Policy.

15. Intellectual property

The Service — including its design, software, text, graphics, logos (including the குருஜி Gmatri mark) and the porutham computation engine — belongs to us or our licensors and is protected by intellectual property laws. Apart from your own content, you may not copy, modify, distribute or create derivative works from the Service without our prior written permission.

16. No guarantees, and limits on our liability

Gmatri helps you discover and contact prospective matches. We do not guarantee that you will find a partner, receive interests, get married or achieve any other outcome. We do not vouch for the identity, intentions, conduct, marital status or suitability of any member beyond what our badges say (section 6), and we are not a party to any conversation, meeting, relationship, engagement or marriage that results from using the Service.

The Service is provided “as is” and “as available”. To the extent the law allows, we disclaim all warranties, express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, and uninterrupted or error-free operation.

To the extent the law allows, we and the people who work with us are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive loss, or for any loss arising from other members’ conduct online or offline, from your reliance on porutham or profile information, or from your use of (or inability to use) the Service. As an intermediary, we are not liable for content posted by members except as the IT Act provides.

Nothing in these Terms limits your rights under the Consumer Protection Act, 2019, or any liability that cannot be limited by law.

17. Indemnity

If you break these Terms or the law, or infringe someone else’s rights, and a claim is made against us as a result, you will compensate us for the reasonable losses and costs (including reasonable legal fees) that follow, to the extent the law allows.

18. Deleting your account and ending these Terms

You can delete your account at any time from Settings → Your data → Delete account. Your profile disappears from Gmatri straight away, and a deleted account cannot be restored. You can download a copy of your data first with Export my data. What happens to your data, and when, is set out in our Privacy Policy.

These Terms end when your account is deleted or terminated, but the sections that by their nature should continue — including sections 11, 15, 16, 17, 20 and 22 — continue to apply.

19. Changes to these Terms, and yearly reminders

We may change these Terms to reflect changes to the Service or the law. We will tell you about a material change — in the app, by SMS or by email — before it takes effect, and update the “Last updated” date above. If you keep using Gmatri after a change takes effect, the new Terms apply; if you do not agree, you can delete your account.

At least once every year we will remind you of these Terms, our Privacy Policy and the rules in sections 9 and 10, and that we may remove content or suspend or end access when they are broken — in English or Tamil, as you choose in the app.

20. Governing law and courts

These Terms are governed by the laws of India. Subject to your right to approach a consumer commission under the Consumer Protection Act, 2019, and any other right the law does not allow you to give up, the courts at Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India have exclusive jurisdiction over any dispute arising out of or relating to these Terms or the Service.

21. Language

These Terms are written in English, and the English text is the binding version. A Tamil privacy notice explains in plain Tamil what data we collect and your rights, and we are preparing a full Tamil translation of these Terms. If a translation ever differs from the English text, the English text applies.

22. General

These Terms, our Privacy Policy and any feature terms we show you in the app are the whole agreement between you and us about the Service. If a court finds any part invalid, the rest continues to apply. If we do not enforce a right straight away, we have not given it up. You may not transfer your account or your rights under these Terms. We may transfer our rights and duties to whoever takes over the Service — for example if the business is sold or incorporated — and we will tell you before that happens; it will not reduce your rights under these Terms or our Privacy Policy. We are not responsible for delays or failures caused by events beyond our reasonable control.

23. Contact us

Questions about these Terms? Write to us at support@gmatri.in. Complaints go to our Grievance Officer (section 14), and privacy matters are covered by our Privacy Policy. Our postal address is [to be confirmed].
